Take some time to see your present, not reviewing the past or worrying for the future. What do you see across the different areas of your life? Are you satisfied in each area or do you feel there are some gaps somewhere? If it is the latter, how can you gain balance? The Wheel of Life is a tool that helps you envision all this. It gives you a bird’s eye view of your life and enables you to get things back on track.

 

 

Buddhist Origins

 

The Wheel of life owes its roots to ancient Buddhist culture where it was used to ensure mental well being of an individual. To the Buddhists, human existence is a cycle of life, death, rebirth and suffering. The Wheel of life or the Wheel of Samsara is divided into six realms that humans can be reborn into. It is like a pie chart having six dimensions and each of those having numerous sub divisions.

 

The Wheel of Life is based on a similar concept with more specific focus on modern life issues. It was originally developed by Paul J Meyer, Founder of Success Motivation Institute.

 

Constructing Wheel of Life

 

The basic ingredient in creating a life wheel is to have a list of all the aspects that you consider important in your life. A sample wheel is shown below

 

 

 

 

A wheel of life is split into six or eight dimensions as shown. There is a scoring system behind the wheel, where you reflect and rate your level of satisfaction on a scale of 10; where 1 means it could not have been worse and 10 would mean it could not have been better.

 

Make your Wheel of life

 

You can simply get a pen and paper and follow these steps:

  1. Brainstorm six to eight dimensions of your life. The common dimensions that are used include health, family and friends, romance/significant other, career, money, physical environment, personal growth, fun and recreation.

  2. Make a wheel and write these dimensions one on each spoke of the wheel.

  3. Assess each dimension and rate them on a 10 point scale where 1 would mean the least and 10 would mean the highest score.

  4. The ratings reflect your level of satisfaction in each of the area.

  5. Now join up the marks around the circle. Does your life wheel look balanced?

  6. Visualise the gaps in your life wheel. These are the areas where you need to give more attention.

How does it work

 

The Wheel of Life is a powerful self expansion tool. Once you have rated each aspect in the wheel try to answer the following questions :

  1. Why did you score the way you did in each category?

  2. What is your ideal score in each category in the next 3 months, or 6 months or one year?

  3. Where are your biggest gaps in satisfaction levels?

  4. Which area do you primarily want to focus to enhance your satisfaction level?

It is not important to be at high score in all aspects, but you need to have a balance in them. The more crooked your wheel looks, the less balance you have in life. The key is to find the balance which is the beauty of the wheel.

 

Take Action

 

Now that you know what you need, it is time to set the wheels in motion. You have a snapshot of how satisfied you are in life and the gaps between where you are and where you want to be. Set goals that are SMART (S- SPECIFIC , M- MEASURABLE, A- ACTIONABLE, R- REALISTIC, T- TIME BOUND).

 

Reward yourself on each small win. That would keep you from losing motivation. Take the wheel of life assessment as often as you can and get from life what you desire.
